When TAG Heuer unveiled the MikropendulmS at Baselworld in 2013, it caused quite a stir in the watchmaking world.
The MikropendulumS is a double tourbillon chronograph that replaces the traditional balance system of a watch, aka springs, with brand new magnetic pendulums. Powerful magnets exert force onto a magnetic pendulum disc that causes it to beat back and forth, much like a balance wheel.
In sum, TAG heuer found a way to defy gravity and build a watch that not only prevented errors from gravity, shock and deformation, but is also easy to make. Sound too good to be true? It is... almost. The magnetic pendulum was originally sensitive to heat and magnetic fields. However, TAG Heuer spent several years researching and developing a new system, one that would overcome the temperature problem. Thanks to our fearless team of scientists who never stopped searching for precisely the right alloys and optimal geometries, TAG Heuer created the first ever magnetic double tourbillon in history.
This technical tour-de-force was unprecedented and once again changed horology history forever.
