Nishikori reaches French Open quarter-finals at Roland Garros

Kei Nishikori is on a historical march at Roland Garros as he reached the quarter-finals on Sunday, May 31st. The 25-year-old Japanese star produced a string of 40 winners to beat No.74-ranked Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in less than two hours. Next up for Nishikori will be Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who upset fourth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych and beat him 6-3, 6-2, 7-6, 6-3. « We haven’t played a long time, » said Nishikori. « He’s coming back very strong. He has a big serve and big forehand. He’s always a dangerous player…So it’s going to be a fun match ». But Nishikori has a 4 to 1 record against Tsonga.

With his victory on Sunday, Kei became the first Japanese player in more than 80 years to reach the quarter-finals at the French Open. The only man from his country to make it this far at Roland Garros was Jiro Satoh, semi-finalist in 1931 and 1933.

His technical skills and his powerful mindset make him a serious challenger for the trophy. The Aquaracer Calibre 5 was high in the air: Kei Nishikori was wearing it on Suzanne Lenglen Court. Good luck, we are all the way with you Kei !
