Karun Chandhok
Indian racing sensation Karun Chandhok has excelled in his brief record-breaking career. After being named the youngest ever Indian Racing Champion in 2000, he followed with the title of youngest Asian Formula Champion in 2001. The next 3 years saw Karun consolidate his skills as a regular front runner in the British Formula Three series. More wins and broken records marked his trajectory through the Formula V6 Asia in 2006.
Chandhok’s racing career dovetails neatly with India’s increasing involvement in Formula One. When India’s first Formula 1 team joined the Grand Prix in 2007, Chandhok was racing GP2, the official support series. That year he won the Belgian GP, resulting in the Indian National Anthem being played for the very first time at a Formula One Grand Prix event.
Chandhok had caught the eye of Formula One teams, and the Red Bull Racing team invited Karun to test their F1 car in 2007, making him, at 24 years old, the youngest Indian to do so. That experience came in handy in 2010 as Karun joined former GP2 teammate Bruno Senna in the new F1 Hispana team. Chandhok faced a steep learning curve - racing cars for the season with no testing time is not an easy task. But Formula 1 is all about calculated risk. And this year Chandhok proved that he is put his intelligence and natural talent to the test.
